In case my tumblr followers were wondering what I’ve been up to - the new Fujiko series was extremely cool, and I wrote a three part series about it.
It discusses Fujiko from the perspective of the gothic romantic tradition; which is where a lot of the imagery in shoujo manga comes from. It’s a feminist piece with a lot of symbolic deconstruction that talks about historical women’s studies and art history.
This piece was linked all over the place, and miraculously recieved a lot of attention. If people want to talk about Fujiko from a woman’s perspective, this might be a good place to get you started, as it was written for people without an innate knowledge of these kinds of things. It’s not meant as an ‘end all, be all’ interpretation of Fujiko but more of a starting point for further research. Spoilers in each part, duly marked.
:.Spoilers for eps 1-6.: Part I
:.Spoilers for eps 6-8.: Part II
:.Spoilers for eps 9-13.: Part III
I want to thank everyone who gave this series attention and encouraged me to keep writing. I really didn’t know if anyone would read it or be interested in women’s issues in anime at all but I was pleasantly surprised. Thank you all, from the bottom of my heart, for the support.
